The purpose of this work is to illustrate the results obtained with a new thermochemical cycle where the gaseous nitrocarburization is followed by oxidation in a salt bath containing alkaline nitrates. By means of this treatment layers with a remarkable corrosion resistance are obtainable. It has been noted that the porosity of the gas-nitrocarburized layers is lower than that obtained by means of salt bath nitrocarburizing and the oxidation produced by nitrate baths has a good penetration power which is higher than that obtained with air oxidation. The influence of different degrees of superficial polishing before nitrocarburizing and oxidizing have also been studied.
