Abstract

In 1561 Philibert de l'Orme codified a construction system based on the idea of assembly small wooden planks to realize vaulted structures with wide spans: a system at the same time pre-rationalist in the logic that implies, technicist in the fascination for the simplicity of the assemblage, utopian for the limits that the social history imposed to it. The identification in the Biellese region of some roofs realized in the last decades of the nineteenth century with arches made by planks – particularly interesting is that of the Trombetta wool factory, today the seat of the Pistoletto Foundation –, roofs which are a late fruit and for many ways spurious of the de l’Orme technique, has triggered a research aimed to reconstruct the evolution of this building technology, rediscovered between the eighteenth and the nineteenth century after a long period of neglect, and to understand the reasons and the ways of its application in the specific context of Biella. In a book dedicated "to the memory of Roberto Gabetti, to the courage of Aimaro Isola", the essay is linked to a tradition of studies on the material history of the building environment cultivated in the Turin Polytechnic for a long time.
