In wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) systems, the impact of fiber nonlinearity can be detrimental: four wave mixing (FWM), cross phase modulation (XPM) and parametric gain (PG) are the main causes. Whereas FWM, XPM and single channel PG have been extensively studied, impact on WDM systems was not yet investigated in detail. In this regard, the PG in a WDM environment is analyzed. In this case, WDM signals propagate along an amplified fiber link, and optical carriers may act as pumps and generate spectral regions where amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise may experience gain, thus potentially degrading system performance.
