Buildings designed with mixed functions, for residential and commercial uses, in the early modern period are examined according to a comparative historical approach. In par-ticular, the text compares the Panaderìa and the other buildings of Madrid's Plaza Mayor, built in the years immediately after on the same model, the buildings that convey shape to Place Royale, initially designed for those employed in the silk industry and for traders, and two projects of buildings with arcades and shops in the Dukedom of Savoy, in Turin and Vicoforte. The interventions are similar in that they had comparable commissioners (royal or ducal), were made to designs created by architects who held an institutional role (the royal architect Francisco de Mora in Spain, the royal architects Androuet du Cerceau or Louis Métezau in France, the ducal engineer Ascanio Vitozzi in Vicoforte and his successor Carlo di Castellamonte in Turin), were carried out during an almost overlapping period in the early decades of thè 17th century and, lastly, shared considerable flexibility in the organisation and distribution of functions, separating the commerciai spaces from the residential spaces. The text also established certain relationships with the probable models of these buildings, all of which were erected on public spaces, with constructions included in programmes for renovatio in the Italian cities of the Renaissance.
