The application of computer graphics techniques to the creation of digital city environments is receiving increasing attention in the last years. This is in part due to the fact that, by mixing heterogeneous components like geographic information systems, virtual model repositories and smart sensor networks, digital cities are expected to be able to allow the various stakeholders involved in urban planning and management to effectively design, monitor and operate present as well as future city infrastructures. In this work, a software framework exploiting web and virtual reality technologies to remotely manage a network of LED-based smart luminaries is presented. The integration of public lighting systems into the digital city picture is considered of particular interest, since through these novel solutions, forthcoming intelligent lighting networks could be supervised in an integrated way, and specific safety, security and energy saving policies could be easily implemented.
