In this study several oxidation batch tests in the presence of ozone were carried out on artificial systems, containing ammonia, bicarbonate and bromide. On the basis of the obtained results, a linear relationship between the ammonia oxidation rate and the concentration of bromide in the system, and a nearly linear relationship between the bicarbonate depletion rate and the bromide concentration were singled out. These relationships allowed the Authors to estimate the ozonation time necessary to reduce the ammonia concentration to a lower level than the fixed value and, at the same time, to calculate the amount of bicarbonate necessary to completely buffer the H+ ions released during the ammonia oxidation process.
