In recent years codes reduced the lower limit for the relative rib area for the acceptance of reinforcing bars without a validation campaign aimed to justify it. Moreover building industry increased significantly the use of mechanical rebar strengthening. This process produces damage on the reinforcing bars flattening ribs. The aim of this work is the evaluation of the influence of the reinforcing bars surface characteristics on the bond properties; the objective is the analysis of the effect of degradation due to bending machines used to straighten reinforcing bars produced in coils. It is pursued by means of a controlled procedure of mechanical reduction of rib height by means of machining. In the experimental campaign three different diameters are considered: 8, 12 and 16 mm and are tested by means of the pull-out RILEM testing method. The behavior in terms of bond strength is compared to the Code provisions and then discussed.
