The changing spatial distribution of a river's physical attributes due to flow variations and the aquatic species' biological response to these changes is the cornerstone for simulating habitat alterations and designing the respective restoration measures. MesoHABSIM is a modification of micro-scale models to support effective simulation of large spatial extents of riverscapes. It offers advantages, such as the incorporation of multivariate physical habitat attributes for entire fish communities and the habitat based assessment of hydrological time series. The model has been developed over the past decade and is applied broadly at the international level. This paper describes the application of MesoHABSIM and illustrates the methodology through examples of successful applications.
