Abstract

Renewable energy is ‘clean’ for the environment, but not always in relation to the landscape (especially for a landscape like the Italian one, so historically articulated). The rapid spread (in Italy) of solar technology has developed, in recent years, a sort of cultural distortion. Some technicians are exclusively concerned with functionality and performance of these structures; some scholars are beginning to consider the aesthetic aspect and the negative impact on the cultural landscape. This paper seeks to provide a context for thinking about examples of both what already exists and of what it is currently only in project, in order to identify a balance between appearance and function.
