The research program focuses on the excavation of cross passages and evaluation of its effects on two main tunnels by numerical method (FLAC3D). The main objectives are listed below: -Evaluation of plastic zones around two main tunnels to find out if it is necessary to use ground improvement before excavation of cross passage. -Evaluation of the effect of geometric and geologic parameters on stress distribution around main tunnels and cross passage. -Evaluation of the effect of geometric and geologic parameters on induced displacements. The research project intends to study the effect of cross passage excavation on the stress distribution around two main tunnels and induced displacements also evaluating the effect of geometric and geologic configurations on tunnels, using numerical modelling (FLAC3D code), to achieve a reference abacus to be useful for evaluation of cross passage excavation effect without using any time consuming numerical analysis.
