In this thesis a novel and efficient tool with practical relevance was developed. For the analysis of patent portfolios at company-level and industry-level, patent landscaping tools method was used to estimate patent value useful to analyze the patent situation across a particular technology field. This research aims have two phases. First, use the importance of searching patent by using basic tools to perform a patent search and doing patent range version and second, use patent data in Mergers & Acquisition to measure economical distance. Within this scope, a general introduction was provided to search using online access patent databases of Thomson Innovation. The essential features of using databases, and their functionality was described to understand patents, searching, and their content and patent families. This study reports an investigation of Patent Landscape on two applications in telecommunication sectors. The Patent Landscape was analyzed using keywords as means to identify relevant patents pertaining to a technological field and patent portfolio. This study, divided into six chapters, is designed to analyze the innovation activity in the field of Network Function Virtualization and Positioning Technology through the study of patent data. The first chapter introduces the concept of patent system by focusing on using their function, and the steps required to obtain it. The second chapter summarized the existing methods for valuing patents, introducing both qualitative and quantitative approaches. The third chapter illustrated details of the patent landscape analysis. In fact, in this section, particular emphasis was given to the methodology needed to identify the relevant patents and analyze them. The fourth chapter provided analysis of patent landscaping on two applications such as Network Function Virtualization and Positioning Technology domain. The analysis of patent data has highlighted the innovative trends in the industry, to recognize the most active assignees, specializing in the study of different methods of applications and analyzing the field’s technology. In the fifth Chapter patent measure was used to map technology competences in Mergers and Acquisitions. This discussed the general problems of M&A innovation and reviewed of the methods to measure economical distance based on patent measures and used design application for testing on what could be extended before mergers distance that could affect the integration of the past merger performance.
