Abstract: Italian/French bilingual e-book. Monography in the "Nuova serie di Architettura" series published by Editore Franco Angeli, Milan. An Italian/French bilingual work resulting from research funded by the Premio Giovani Ricercatori Politecnico di Torino 2011. The research, carried out in 2013, and the work, enjoy the moral patronage of the Italian Culture Institute in Brussels. Between the 19th and 20th centuries, Charles Buls (1837-1914), traveller, publicist, aesthete, burgomaster of the city of Brussels, known for his studies of "urban art", analysed the problems of the conservation of historical cities, where petitions for the defence of constructions entwine, on one hand with the desire to preserve the picturesque views, and on the other with the need for Buls' writings on the restoration of monuments and the urban environment, composed between 1903 and 1914, making both the scientific transcription in Belgian French and the translation into Italian available. Charles Buls' restoration works, while being referred to by numerous studies due to the influence of his thoughts on the successive approach by Gustavo Giovannoni, were still largely inaccessible and unexplored by Italian literature on restoration, as were his travel diaries. Described by the founders of the culture of informed urban design, a co-leader with Joseph Stübben, Louis Cloquet, Cornelius Gurlitt and Paul Clemen, polyglot and widely introduced into the European cultural enclaves of the time focused on defending material heritage, Buls articulated his theories and critical orientations based on his experience as pedagogue and public administrator - with a strong liberal, reformative and moral imprint - and on the influence received from the thoughts of Hugo, Ruskin and Viollet-le-Duc. A reflection on Buls' contribution to the debate on restauration, related to Italian and international theoretic statutes, is traced in the book, with the examination of the texts collected in the anthology and the critical perusal of his papers and study notes. Long trips to Italy from the first Grand Tour in 1860 to the more frequent and prolonged stays between 1901 and 1909, led Buls to entertain relations with certain central figures of the history of conservation and to have his own influence on cultural horizons. This close network of relationships, documented in his Carnets de voyages, most of which are unpublished and kept in the Archives de la Ville de Bruxelles - where the research was carried out, in the Buls Archive Collection and in his printed works, which were previously part of his personal library, left in his will to the Archives -, indicates a circulation of ideas on a European scale which exceeds the confines of the disciplinary sphere of restoration./ Voyageur, publiciste, esthète, bourgmestre de la ville de Bruxelles, réputé pour ses travaux sur l'Art Public, Charles Buls (1837-1914) a approfondi, entre les XIXe et XXe siècles, les problématiques portant sur la conservation de la ville historique, là où les instances liées à la protection du patrimoine se mêlent d'une part à la volonté de sauvegarder et préserver l'identité ancienne, d'autre part aux exigences novatrices face au progrès technologique et social.
