Speech recognition is fundamental in everyday communication environments, especially in school classrooms where the teaching-learning process takes place. Extensive literature is available that refers to speech intelligibility studies on the effect of artificially added reverberation and speech-shaped noise, whereas there is a little number of works that account for realistic acoustics. This work investigates the effect of measured classroom acoustics on speech intelligibility, accounting for the effect of informational and energetic masking, distance teacher-to-listener between and binaural unmasking.

Abstract

Speech recognition is fundamental in everyday communication environments, especially in school classrooms where the teaching-learning process takes place. Extensive literature is available that refers to speech intelligibility studies on the effect of artificially added reverberation and speech-shaped noise, whereas there is a little number of works that account for realistic acoustics. This work investigates the effect of measured classroom acoustics on speech intelligibility, accounting for the effect of informational and energetic masking, distance teacher-to-listener between and binaural unmasking.
