The principle of the universal value of a cultural asset, save to the extent that the 9 Sacred Mountains in Italy appear on the list of World Heritage sites, makes it possible to bring together the theme of protection with that of development. It is precisely in this context that the interdisciplinary research group of the Turin Polytechnic Faculty of Architecture II is trying out a pilot proposal for a model management plan applicable to the Sacred Mountains. This arises out of a need to deal with a specific state of the art which sees the Sacro Monte di Varallo (Piedmont- Italy) as the ideal place for an initial application of a prototype plan which can be more widely applied, with appropriate modelling, first of all to other architectural phenomena, and secondly to entire territorial systems and more complex contexts, which might function as a methodological grid extendable to territorial scale.
