The SASLAB (Sustainability Assessment of Second Life Application of Automotive Batteries) exploratory research project aims at exploring the emerging area of second use of the batteries of electrified (road) vehicles (xEVs) in stationary applications and developing and applying an adapted methodology to analyse the sustainability of such technically sound systems. The present work presents a mapping of activities/projects/research studies using second use xEV batteries and their experimental assessment in first and second use applications. Furthermore, the change of capacity and impedance of lithium-ion cells during calendar and cycle ageing is being analysed and assessed. Fresh cells, cells aged in the laboratory, and cells aged under real-world driving conditions, disassembled from the battery pack of a used series-production electric vehicle, are being characterised towards a better understanding of their application-specific remaining lifetime, beyond the 70% to 80% end of first life criterion. The ageing of the pre-aged battery cells is then examined under duty cycles (or mission profiles) that resemble to the ones of the second use stationary grid-scale applications, such as e.g. primary frequency regulation, photovoltaic (PV) firming and smoothing, and results are presented and discussed hereafter.
