In many cases open pits in mountainous areas as subject to collapse of rock bouldes (rock fall) which can reach the quarry area and create safety hazards for both personnel and mine infrastructure. The paper demonstrates that net fences widely used for risk mitigation of rock fall in civil and road construction, can be used succesfully also for mining activities, with special reference to ornamental stone quarries. A description of these protection techniques and design key points are highligthed and discussed.
