The aim of this work is to present the physical problem of neutron slowing down in finite absorbing media, within the framework of diffusion theory. The Laplace transformation along the lethargy variable is used for the solution of the balance equation of the proposed model and both analytical and numerical methodologies are presented for its required inversion. The different techniques allow many significant features of the phenomena involved to be highlighted and can be fruitfully employed to introduce nuclear engineering students into the physics of the neutron slowing down.

Abstract
